President unveils new UTHealth brand for academic health center
HOUSTON – (Feb. 8, 2010) – Larry R. Kaiser, M.D., F.A.C.S., president of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, on Monday unveiled a new brand identity designed to increase the university’s visibility as a prominent institution in the Texas Medical Center and the nation.
During a presentation, which was broadcast to students, faculty and staff at 12 locations, Kaiser announced The University of Texas System Board of Regents’ unanimous approval of UTHealth as the university’s short dba (doing business as) name.
Along with UTHealth, the regents on Friday approved a brief descriptive phrase, which is “academic health center at Houston,” and a new logo. The logo is dark gray and burnt orange and features a tapestry symbol that represents the strength derived from working together to tackle complex health challenges.
“Leading this university is an honor that means more to me every day,” Kaiser said. “During the past 18 months, I have met more talented, high-achieving people than I can count and learned about programs here that are among the best in the world. This is an institution on the move.
“But despite the tremendous impact the university has on this community – and beyond – the community knows far too little about what we do,” Kaiser said. “That’s the primary reason we began a branding initiative. With Friday’s decision by the UT System Regents, we are poised to take a big step in creating a brand that is as strong as this university, and which tells the community who we are and what we achieve.”
Kaiser said that while the new logo and dba name are important, the heart of the branding initiative is the promise: “Because we are many diverse components woven into one university, the exceptional people of UTHealth deliver innovative solutions that create the best hope for a healthier future.”
Connecting education, research, prevention and patient care in bold, innovative ways, UTHealth brings together the Dental Branch, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, Medical School, School of Public Health, School of Nursing, the School of Health Information Sciences and The University of Texas Harris County Psychiatric Center. It also includes the Brown Foundation Institute of Molecular Medicine for the Prevention of Human Diseases, the Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences and more than three dozen other centers and institutes.
With more than 3,800 students, UTHealth offers two professional degrees, 12 graduate degrees, two bachelor’s degrees and also certificate and joint/dual degree programs.
The robust research enterprise includes 800 cutting-edge research projects and more than $200 million expended annually in sponsored projects.
Last year, there were almost a million patient visits to UTHealth’s Medical School and Dental Branch clinics. Its affiliated hospitals include Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center and Lyndon B. Johnson General Hospital.
“I’m excited about the future of this university,” Kaiser said. “I know that, together here at UTHealth, we are creating the best hope for a healthier future.”
