Community Service

The university offers patient care in clinics, mobile units and within schools across Houston and surrounding areas as well as communities along the Texas-Mexico border. Health education is provided to children and adults in the Houston area and continuing education is provided across the state to health professionals.

Quick Facts FY07

  • The Dental Branch provided over $1.3 million in charity dental care.
  • The Harris County Psychiatric Center providing mental health information to more than 50,000 people.
  • The Medical School provided $100 million in unsponsored care.
  • The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences has a 18-year relationship with HISD's Brookline Elementary School.
  • The School of Health Information Sciences conducted a research program jointly to research the problem and define a roadmap for implementation for the Greater Houston Community to be prepared for an emergency.
  • The School of Nursing provided service in several affiliated clinics and select HISD schools.
  • The School of Public Health has several outreach programs in Houston, Brownsville, Dallas, El Paso and San Antonio.
